Know Thy Enemy

Ants are referred as social insects because they live together in groups also known as a colony. Each colony consists of hundreds to millions of ants depending on the type of species. The members in each group are assigned different roles and responsibilities by the queen ant who lays eggs. Other ants in the group are known as “workers” and their job is to bring food for the group. There is one more category of ants in a colony, known as “swarmers” and their responsibility is to mate and be able to create a new colony. That is when these swarmers lay eggs in the house. These ants may look the same as termites but they have different characteristics such as, smaller waists, and different wing size.

Launching your Attack

You can easily get rid of ants by spraying pesticides in their nests. This happens when you successfully kill the queen ant and the workers inside that nest. Spraying pesticides just on the surfaces and visible areas isn’t really an effective way to kill ants because their nest is usually found in hidden places such as behind the doors and walls, appliances, furniture and cabinets.

This makes it very difficult for us to locate their homes but if you could install baits, it would really help them to locate ants nest and eliminate them. The biggest advantage of using baits is that the ants will eat and bring some food to their nest which will poison the queen and the worker ants. There is no need to spray the bait or else the ants won’t eat that food. If the trails are easily visible, it’s best to put the bait near their nest.

If the ants have created their nest in your garden or any nearby surroundings, don’t think of spraying insecticides or burning their nest because it might force them to move inside your house. Ant baits can also be used outside the house near ant trails.

Some other effective methods of eliminating ants worth mentioning: Cinnamon, Catnips, Dish washing soap, Vinegar, Black pepper, Bay leaves, Chalk, mint leaves and whole cloves.

Things to remember:

  • Don’t leave your food outside. Always remember to keep it sealed or inside refrigerators.
  • Bleach your cabinet, drawers and shelves from time to time and keep them clean.
  • Put all your garbage in very tight containers and place them outside your house.
  • Wash your plates, dishes and stove tops on daily basis.
  • It’s best to store things such as sugar, cereals, crackers, and flour in tight metal containers.
  • Fill all the holes and gaps in places such as walls, cupboards, cabinets and pipes.

Although getting rid of ants is not as easy as it sounds but if you follow all these steps successfully, you can eliminate them. Apart from this you also need to have some patience and determination because it could even take months to totally get rid of ants in your house.
